Sleep

Sleep medicine is a medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, narcolepsy, insomnia and restless leg syndrome. Sleep disorders can lead to conditions such as snoring, daytime sleepiness, memory loss, irritability, depression and sexual dysfunction. Sleep disorders can also affect job performance and relationships, and some can even be life-threatening because they create a greater risk of obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. Sleep disorders are diagnosed and treated at a sleep center. Brain activity, breathing patterns, heart rhythms and muscle activity are monitored and recorded while the patient sleeps. If a sleep disorder is diagnosed, an individualized treatment plan is created.
