Pulmonology

Pulmonology is the medical specialty that focuses on diseases of the respiratory tract and respiratory disease. Pulmonologists focus on the breathing process and getting oxygen into and out of the body. Some conditions treated by pulmonologists include asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, lung cancer, pneumonia and sleep apnea, to name a few. A branch of internal medicine, pulmonology is closely tied to critical care medicine because of its connection to mechanical ventilation and to sleep disorders. Many pulmonologists are also specially trained to detect and treat sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea, narcolepsy, snoring, and restless leg syndrome.
